This week’s chart comes as no surprise given Activision’s announcement late last week that the latest outing for the Call of Duty series has outsold Black Ops to become the best selling video game ever.
Obviously it was a guaranteed number one anyway, even though it was going up against Skyrim, the fresh helping of Elder Scrolls which RPG fans have been keenly awaiting all year.
In the UK, according to Chart Track, Modern Warfare hit number one and outdid Black Ops by revenue, but not by units shifted. Apparently that was about an even race.
Impressively for Activision, the game achieved the highest grossing opening week of all-time in this country for any entertainment title, outselling the opening weekend box office takings of the last four Harry Potter movies combined.
Even if some critics don’t agree that Modern Warfare 3 is enough of a step forward, as we all knew that didn’t make the blindest bit of difference.
Modern Warfare 3 sold the most on the Xbox, with 59% of units shifted on Microsoft’s console, and 40% on the PS3.
As we’ve already mentioned, Skyrim was this week’s other major launch which came in at number two. It still recorded the best selling opening week ever for Bethesda, doubling the tally of Fallout: New Vegas.
That adds up to a lot of games sold last week between just these two titles.
Battlefield 3 found itself down at number three, followed by another EA title, FIFA 12, which is still selling well and now at number four. Just Dance 3 again stayed static at number five.
Uncharted 3 slid from number two to number six, and there was another new entry at number seven, Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo on the DS.
Batman: Arkham City has now slipped to number eight and looks like exiting the top ten in the next couple of weeks.
It was followed by Zumba Fitness, and then Wii Party which experienced a five-fold resurgence in sales to see it reach number ten. That’s thanks to it being bundled with the Nintendo Wii White Family Edition.
