BT has announced another phase of faster broadband roll out is to begin across Scotland, but this isn’t part of the fibre program which is currently underway.

In fact it’s a bolstering of its copper based network, with 47 exchanges serving some 186,000 homes and businesses (including two exchanges on Shetland and Orkney, Lerwick and Kirkwall) being upgraded to ADSL2.

This offers broadband speeds of up to 20Mbps, although as with standard ADSL (which is up to 8Mbps), if you’re any distance from the exchange you won’t get anywhere near that headline figure.

BT boasts that the new lines will be open to the competition via Local Loop Unbundling or LLU, so expect TalkTalk to move in pretty swiftly as an alternative to BT.

BT also said that the extension will mean ADSL2 services will be available to 1.5 million homes and businesses across Scotland next summer, when the roll out is planned to be completed.

Brendan Dick, Director BT Scotland, commented: “BT’s roll-out of faster broadband across Scotland is gathering pace.”

“Earlier this month we announced plans to make super-fast, fibre-based broadband available to 695,500 homes and businesses by the end of next year. Now we are able to confirm a further major investment in faster broadband speeds over copper lines.”

“Nobody is doing more than BT to roll-out faster broadband across Scotland. At a time of economic uncertainty these major improvements will provide a big boost for local businesses and offer many additional educational and entertainment opportunities for local households.”

The full list of exchanges due for an upgrade is as follows:

KIRRIEMUIR, BANCHORY, MONIFIETH, CULTER, GIRVAN, PETERHEAD, MAYBOLE, PORTLETHEN, STEWARTON, ALNESS, ALLOWAY, DINGWALL, HAWICK, GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY, SELKIRK, INVERGORDON, ALVA, FORT WILLIAM, STRANRAER, OBAN, HADDINGTON, KIRKWALL, EAGLESHAM, STANLEY, ANSTRUTHER, BRIDGE OF EARN, LADYBANK, LERWICK, BURNTISLAND, BRIDGE OF ALLAN, KENNOWAY, MARYHILL, BALLINGRY, SPRINGBURN, COWDENBEATH, BISHOPBRIGGS, NEWPORT/WORMIT, BUSBY, KELTY, STEPPS, HUNTLY, ARMADALE, KINTORE/TRS, WEST CALDER, LOSSIEMOUTH, FAULDHOUSE, BUCKSBURN.
