BAFTA game nominations are announced

Batman: Arkham City and LA Noire up for eight awards apiece

The GAME British Academy Video Games Award nominations have been announced for 2012.

And the top two most nominated games are Batman: Arkham City and LA Noire, each notching up eight nominations.

Both games have been nominated in the Artistic Achievement, Best Game, Design, Original Music, Performer and Story categories.

Batman is also up for a chance at scooping the Action and Audio Achievement awards, with LA Noire being nominated for Game Innovation and Debut Game.

Uncharted 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 were next on the most nominated list, appearing in six categories.

Uncharted 3 is up for Artistic Achievement, Performer, Action, Audio Achievement, Original Music and Story.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was also nominated for Artistic Achievement and Performer, along with Design, Family, Game Innovation and Online Multiplayer.

Skyrim managed to accrue five nominations in the categories of Artistic Achievement, Original Music, Best Game, Design and Story.

Portal 2 tied Bethesda’s RPG with five, for Best Game, Design, Story, Action and Performer.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was next in line with four nominations for Action, Original Music, Story and Strategy.

Two games secured a trio of categories – Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

While there were quite a number of games with two nominations: Bastion, Battlefield 3, Dance Central 2, Dark Souls, FIFA 12, From Dust, Kinect Sports 2, Monstermind, The Nightjar, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D Land, and Total War: SHOGUN 2.

We’d have thought Battlefield 3, Super Mario 3D Land and FIFA 12 might have done better.

Forty-eight different games have been nominated overall, meaning twenty-seven titles managed to be included in a single category.

There’s also the GAME Award for the best of 2011, which is voted on by the public. The shortlist for this is as follows: Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 2012, L.A. Noire, Minecraft, Portal 2, Skyrim and Uncharted 3.

You can vote now at the BAFTA Game Award website here, with a Star Wars Xbox up for grabs for one lucky voter.

The award ceremony happens on March 16th, and is hosted by Dara O’Briain of Mock the Week and stargazing fame.
