Toshiba 55ZL2 4K 3DTV out next week

Those of you who want big screen 3D without the glasses, rejoice... but prepare for the price tag

Toshiba’s 55ZL2 was announced last September, and since then, we’ve keenly been awaiting news on its UK launch date.

And the good news is that the monster 55 inch set will be on sale next week at John Lewis, Toshiba announced on its Facebook page. The bad news is that should you want a piece of the action, it’ll set you back £7,000.

So why is it so expensive? Well, this is a 4K TV set, in other words it has a resolution of a whopping 3840×2160 pixels, double that of a conventional 1080p HDTV.

This allows it to display a slightly offset full HD picture simultaneously to the left and right eye of the viewer to create a High Definition 3D picture with no need for any glasses. Yes, it’s 3DTV without the need for any specs, like a giant 3DS, if you will.

Except unlike the 3DS, the 55ZL2 doesn’t require the viewer to be sat right in front of it to experience the proper 3D effect. The TV can track the position of multiple viewers and adjust its display to ensure that everyone can enjoy the 3D image wherever they’re sat, with up to nine different optimal viewing positions available. Clever stuff.

And that’s why it has a bank-balance-busting price tag.

The set is a hybrid back and edge-lit LED TV, with a claimed 9 million to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, smart TV functionality and 2D to 3D upscaling.

Initially, Toshiba is selling the 55ZL2 with John Lewis exclusively, although doubtless other retail outlets will get in on the act before long.

The question is: Do you go for a 4K, glasses-free 3D set now, or do you save your seven grand and splash it on a Samsung or LG 55 inch OLED TV later this year.

It all depends on how important 3D – and dispensing with the specs – is to you, but we might be tempted to wait for big screen OLED ourselves.
