It was the battle of the gaming giants, this week, as Max Payne 3 took on Diablo III in the UK all-format game chart.
And Max Payne invoked bullet time to shoot down its role-playing rival, with the Rockstar game managing to secure the number one spot. It’s Rockstar’s first all-format number one since LA Noire a year ago.
The third Max Payne outsold the second episode by no less than a factor of ten, although it was developed in-house rather than by Remedy who took on Payne 2. Max Payne 3 also proved this year’s biggest seller since Mass Effect 3 was unleashed.
The much awaited Diablo III had to make do with the runner up spot, although it has to be remembered that the RPG is PC only. In fact, it became the twelfth fasting selling PC game ever – and was only 8,000 ujits short of Max Payne, which was sold across the Xbox and PS3 (as well as PC).
So in actual fact, that’s a very impressive performance by Blizzard’s dungeon delver.
FIFA Street was at number three, with Sniper Elite V2 slipping from the top spot to number four this week.
FIFA 12 was at number five, followed by Prototype 2, then Modern Warfare 3 which is making another resurgence up the chart.
Battlefield 3 found itself at number eight, then Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and finally Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games was at number ten.
