Huawei has announced the commercial debut of its YouView box in the UK.
The set-top box has already been installed in UK homes by TalkTalk, starting in October, with apparently 29,000 customers hooked up to YouView on TalkTalk packages already.
Huawei UK and Ireland Executive Vice President Mark Mitchinson said: “This is an era-defining moment in British television, just as the introduction of 4G services is for the UK mobile market. Huawei’s technology is at the heart of both of these revolutions. YouView delivers a comprehensive and easy-to-use TV experience, which is hugely compelling, and will come to define British TV viewing habits going forward.”
YouView, of course, is the much delayed free digital TV and on-demand service which should have launched last year (if indeed, not before then).
It uses a digital TV aerial and Internet connection to deliver 70 live channels and a range of catch-up services, including the usual suspects such as the iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and so forth.
The set-top box features a hard drive, so you can record programmes, and it has the usual live pause and rewind features you’d expect, as well as search functionality.
