Windows 8 apps hit 20,000 mark

Although that's a global total so not what you'll see in the UK store

Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system has been out for a month, and the apps on the Windows Store have now reached the 20,000 mark.

They hit 10,000 just after launch, so that number has doubled fairly swiftly, according to tweeted stats from Win App Update.

Note that the 20,600 total of Windows apps that Win App Update estimates is a global figure, counting all the apps in different territories. In fact, there are some 11,000 apps in the UK Windows Store, with the US on 12,600.

The good news for Windows users is that apparently 87 per cent of those apps are free.

Of course, these numbers are still way behind the hundreds of thousands of apps on iOS and Android.

Still, as Win App Update noted in another tweet, the current rate of apps being added to the Windows Store is 500 per day; and if that continues, the store will hit 70,000 by next March.

That would be a pretty respectable selection – if the pace of devs writing apps continues at the speed set in the first month of Windows 8’s existence. We shall see…
