Today is Earth Day 2013, and Google has drawn attention to the occasion with an interactive doodle.

If you head off to the search page, you’ll see the doodle, which features a green and lush landscape, the midday sun glaring down on the land – with a play button in the middle of it.

Hit that play button, and the sun will start to sink towards the horizon – then night falls, and the moon comes up, with the cycle repeating. The seasons then change, with the leaves on the trees falling, and then a snowy winter scene emerging.

Other elements of the doodle are also interactive – move the cursor over the flowers, for example, and you can chop them down, to watch them regrow. Click on a cave to see a bear emerge, and so forth. Click on the clouds, and the rain comes pelting down – or the snow in the winter.

There are a number of other interactive elements, too. Just mouse and click around yourself.

Earth Day aims to raise the recognition of climate change around the world, and the effect it is already having on some people’s lives.
