Default Linux video off-loading to graphics card

This is worth reading if anybody is considering graphics cards for a mythtv setup:

By the look of it only MPEG2 streams can be offloaded at present. I'm not sure what this will mean once HDTV is being transmitted using DVB-S2 & MPEG4 - nor whether decoding MPEG4 will be more or less taxing when compared with MPEG2.

Sounds interesting. I don't pretend to understand the detail, but handing off some stuff to the GPU has got to be good.

I'm also unsure if the processing overhead for MPEG4 will be more or less that MPEG2. I think it's more efficient in terms of bandwidth, but whether that means more processing or not I don't really know. I would suspect yes based on what people are finding with other software-based solutions, but we'll have to wait and see I guess.

Anybody using this yet?

Hi,

One more reason for me to regret getting an ATI card for my MythTV box, is that the drivers support XVMC! Shame!

Cheers
