Big sound, small speakers, definitely a rare find. Its difficult for both the consumers who are looking for this kind of deal, and for manufacturers who wants to deliver this type of product to the consumers. Boston Acoustic’s SoundWare XS 5.1 Surround Speaker System is an attempt to satisfy this need. Available in black and white, the speaker system is designed to be shelf, wall or corner mounted.

First of, the SoundWare XS 5.1 system consists of five 4-inch cube satellite speakers and a slightly larger 8-inch subwoofer. The sattelites are spec’ed down to 150Hz with the subwoofer meeting it and going as low as 50Hz. While this won’t provide the sort of bone crushing bass that an Audioholic demands, it should be more than enough for regular users who just want to hear surround sound audio.

The SoundWare XS 5.1 sounds surprisingly good considering its size. It cannot, however, beat other average-sized 5.1 speakers. Nevertheless, the SoundWare XS sounds perfect especially in tight and compact areas. In fact, it is advisable to use the SoundWare XS in small rooms and spaces since raising the volume up (as what everyone tends to do in larger areas) will eventually distort the sound coming out of it. Turning it down a little allows the speakers to recover and go back to its normally okay sound.

The SoundWare XS is pretty adept with high definition audio. It actually performs slightly better than other brands and the subwoofer/satellite blend is so smooth you’ll never hear the sub as a sound source. With the SoundWare XS, dialogue is clear and articulate, and the five speakers created an enveloping surround experience.

Really, the only drawback for the SoundWare XS, aside from its low tolerance level for high volume, is its connectors. Because of its small size, there is almost no room for angling speaker wire into the connectors. The connectors extremely awkward to use; you have to push with a fair amount of pressure on the connector to open the hole, then ever to gently angle the bare wire into the hole, and then release the connector.

All in all, the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 5.1 Surround Speaker System is a pretty good home theater solution for those people with tight, cramped areas. The small sattelite speakers are a great advantage. You also get great sound, but just make sure you don’t turn the volume up too high.
